Geographies of Marketization in Higher Education: Branch Campuses as Territorial and Symbolic Fixes

The role of higher education institutions as active agents globalization and marketization remains relatively little explored. Economic geographic perspectives are particularly well placed to investigate globalizing an important economic sector, in addition its supportive the knowledge economy. Drawing on political cultural fixes, study analyzes motivations spatial strategies for expansion universities through establishment branch campuses. Based qualitative interviews with key decision-makers English universities, I argue that (international) campuses enable a range fixes institutions: territorial fix construction segmented markets symbolic relocation places promise reputational gains. rapid growth British abroad domestically (in global city London) involve substantial financial risks constitute only temporary stabilizations. conceptualization may more nuanced understanding space segmented, yet relational combines intersecting logics.
